Scholarship Recipients 2004 -
Walter's Gang:
In 2004, for the first time, the
Parkway Running
Club used the Walter Burgess Scholarship
Fund to award scholarships four scholarships to the
Newport Running Camp.
1. Cedar Crest College coaches, Val and Dan Donohue,
recommended Katie B. Katie strives at all times to put maximum
effort into any task she is given. She was awarded Second Team
All-Conference honors last fall. She competes annually in the Women’s 5K
Classic, a women-only breast cancer walk/run benefit which is the largest
event of its kind in Pennsylvania. Last year, she finished 20th
out of 884 runners, and 4th in her age group.
Katie is a junior majoring in Chemistry with a
concentration in Forensics and a minor in Biology. She is also a leader
within her community. In addition to her role as the captain of the
cross-country team, she is incredibly active on campus and also with
Habitat for Humanity.
Katie B. was unable to earn money this summer because
she’s taking a full-time unpaid internship for school. She knew
immediately that she would not be able to attend camp, which was
especially disappointing to her, since she attended last year and really
got a lot out of it. However, because of
Walter’s scholarship, Katie is excited to be a part of camp and
partake of its benefits.
2.
Ken Pelletier recommended Christine A.
who will be a Gardner Mass. high school senior in September. Christine has
been running cross-country, indoor, and outdoor track for 3 years. She had
attended the Newport Running Camp the summer after her freshman year and
loved it. She was unable to attend last summer, and without the Walter
Burgess Scholarship, she would not have been able to attend this year.
Christine has been looking forward to this camp experience because she
feels it "is full of people who could make her a top athlete". She loves
the experience of running, but also the experience of making friends with
other runners - all of which she will get at the Newport Running Camp.
3. Tyler (10 years old) and Brandon (13
years old) Burgess are brothers and are Walter Burgess' nephews. They
would not have been able to attend the Newport Running Camp without this
scholarship. Brandon and Tyler got interested in running just before
Walter died. Both boys were very close to Walter and still miss him very
much. Walter inspired their interest in running.
Their mother's friend
Kent V. took up running right before Walter passed
away. Kent completed the 2004 Boston Marathon
in Walter's honor and expects to do it again in April. With the help of
the Newport Running Camp, the boys will continue Walter's running dreams
and could one day be doing the Boston Marathon themselves.
All of these recipients really appreciate the
opportunity to attend the Newport Running Camp in Walter's name! Walter
would be honored and amazed that so many people cared enough to contribute
to his scholarship. There is no doubt he would be pleased that others
could share and develop his and their love of
running.
Thank you, Walter!
